Day10: 18 July 00

Problem solving continued to be the order of the day. The site was, unusually for Orkney, frustratingly dry, making the definition of individual layers and features very difficult. This was particularly apparent to the south of the chapel where the ground was so hard and dried out that it became impossible to identify whether any burials had survived.

Stone features, however, were easier to identify and it became clear that an edged pathway had been constructed leading to the sub-circular building which pre-dates the chapel. This seems to lead directly to an earthfast stone located in the centre of the building.

The newly uncovered edged pathway pre-dating the chapel.

The building to which the pathway leads, where a shallow tank-like feature is being excavated.

Elsewhere, a small additional area was opened in order to locate the northwest corner of the chapel's latest enclosure wall. The wall appears to be slightly curved and the return was not identified last year. Tomorrow we will have a better idea of its position.

The new area opened to locate the later enclosure wall return. The earlier return lies to the right.
