Day 4: 11th July 2000

Despite the intrusion today of some hairy cows and a faux police helicopter, the area to the northeast of the chapel gave up a putative cross-slab, lying face down and running underneath the boundary wall.

The possible cross-slab, as excavated by guest digger, Matty

Elsewhere to the east, the area containing the iron age features (predating the chapel) was extended right up to the shoreline, showing more exciting evidence of structures there. To the northwest, the area of rubble from the nave walls was finally cleared, and more rubble, contemporary with adjacent areas, has begun to emerge.

Bottom left-hand corner showing contemporary rubble that will be examined in detail tomorrow.

The high winds and lack of rain today made for pleasant digging, if a little bracing. And the boat made it back OK this evening.
