Moncur Memorial Church of Scotland

This is the island's only Protestant church and is well worth a visit when in Stronsay. The old United Presbyterian church, which formerly occupied this site, was demolished to make way for the building of this church in 1955 to a design by Edinburgh architect Leslie Grahame MacDougall. A large building of cruciform design, it is architecturally unique in Orkney while still retaining many of the traditional Orcadian features in its construction. Good use is made of local red sandstone and blue flagstone while the plain circle-headed arches, the exposed wooden rafters and simplicity of the oak furnishings all add to the simple dignity of this magnificent building. There is a beautiful stained glass window of 'The Good Shepherd' in the east gable which in itself makes a visit to this building well worthwhile. Visitors to the church are always welcome and the main door on the south porch is usually open, so please feel free to go in and look around. If the door happens to be locked, the~Minister Rev Jennifer George, stays in the Manse at the back of the Church and is always happy to show people around. A church service is held here every Sunday at 11.00 a.m. with a Sunday Club for the children and crèche facilities for the younger children. A warm welcome is extended to all to come along and join us for this service.
